The Department of Periodontology at Index Institute of Dental Sciences enthusiastically celebrated World Oral Health Day 2026 with a series of educational and community-oriented activities aimed at promoting oral hygiene awareness and preventive dental care. The programme was organized to reinforce the importance of maintaining good oral health as an essential component of overall well-being. Faculty members, postgraduate scholars, interns, and undergraduate students actively participated in the campaign, reaching out to patients and the community through awareness drives and educational sessions.
A wide range of activities was conducted during the celebration, including oral health awareness camps, expert health talks, seminars, group discussions, leaflet-making competitions, and interactive patient counselling sessions. Special emphasis was placed on educating the public about proper brushing techniques, plaque control measures, regular dental check-ups, and the prevention of oral diseases. Tobacco cessation counselling formed an important part of the campaign, where participants highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and encouraged individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles. The initiative created an engaging platform for students to enhance their communication skills while contributing to public health education.
Adding a practical dimension to the programme, hands-on demonstrations on the use of plaque detection devices were organized to help patients understand the importance of effective oral hygiene practices. The activities were conducted in collaboration with Haleon, which supported the initiative through the distribution of toothpaste samples and oral care educational materials. The interactive sessions enabled participants to gain practical knowledge about preventive oral healthcare while encouraging positive behavioural changes. Through these comprehensive activities, the Department of Periodontology reaffirmed its commitment to community service, preventive dentistry, and the promotion of oral health awareness, making World Oral Health Day 2026 a meaningful and impactful event for both students and the public.
