In a significant initiative to promote a tobacco-free society, the Departments of Public Health Dentistry, Oral Medicine & Radiology, and Periodontics at Index Institute of Dental Sciences, Indore, jointly organized a comprehensive month-long awareness campaign on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day. Conducted from 8 May to 8 June, the campaign aimed to educate students, patients, staff, and the general public about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the importance of early intervention and cessation. Through a series of informative, engaging, and community-oriented activities, the institute reaffirmed its commitment to preventive oral healthcare and public health awareness. The initiative highlighted the role of dental professionals in identifying tobacco-related oral diseases and motivating individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Throughout the campaign, a variety of awareness activities were conducted to maximize community participation and outreach. These included awareness rallies, oral health education sessions, and screening camps that emphasized the importance of regular dental check-ups and early detection of tobacco-related oral conditions. Motivational counselling sessions were organized for patients and non-teaching staff to encourage tobacco cessation through personalized guidance and support. To engage the younger generation creatively, a Nukkad Natak (street play) and a reel-making competition were conducted, allowing students to spread impactful messages against tobacco use through artistic expression and digital platforms. These activities not only enhanced awareness but also inspired participants to become ambassadors of a tobacco-free lifestyle within their communities.
A major highlight of the campaign was the organization of two expert guest lectures delivered by Dr. Sudarshana Prince and Dr. Ram Ghulam Razdan, who shared valuable insights into nicotine addiction, its adverse effects on oral and overall health, and scientifically proven tobacco cessation strategies. Their informative sessions enriched the knowledge of students and faculty while emphasizing the importance of evidence-based approaches in tobacco control. The month-long observance concluded with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, healthcare professionals, and the community, making it a meaningful success. Through this impactful initiative, Index Institute of Dental Sciences once again demonstrated its dedication to community service, preventive dentistry, and creating greater awareness about the importance of living a healthy, tobacco-free life.
